What I thought of learn and play

I think Learn and Play was great! it provided me with new tools to help our customers. I learned an enormous amount of information while working on the 23 things. I really struggles with Flicker and attaching the picture I chose to my blog. But once I got past that, it was a breeze.

The things I liked most were, RSS feeds and setting up my own Blogline newsreader account. I also liked Librarything and plan to use it on a regular basis.

I wasn't too crazy about twitter or delicious. I don't think I have the personality to use them on a regular basis.

Now that I'm finished, I can see the value (as it relates to my job) of knowing how to use the information I learned from Learn & Play! It was worth the time and we as librarians need to keep exploring what's out on the web in order to remain librarian 2.0s.

Moldi is way easier than I could have imagined. You can search any kind of media. I really like that you can download both fiction and nonfiction books. I found that there aren't many e-books for teens. I think it will be neat to listen to a classic like Great Expectations on the computer. I already dowloaded it to my computer. It was easy to do!

There were many podcasts about library news. I really liked Podcast Alley the best. It was easy to use and not too overwelming with information. Podcast are usefull if you want to listen to the information. I think libraries could use podcasts as a cost effective way to do trainings and workshops.

I chose this video because it reminds me of true library public service.

I really like the different tabs like videos, channels, and community. it narrows the videos. You could possibly use a youtube post in a presentation when relivant.

My favorite thing in the power toold was boingboing. it really does seem to have information about everything. A very near directory.

I used the short list and decided to pict something I was not familiar with. So, I chose Lulu.com.
You can create, by or sell books with the help of this site. I think it is neat that you can download photos and create you owm book or calendar. Then publish and sell them on this site.

Thing 17 Google Docs

I never knew!

This is a great resource. I'll never need to buy microsoft office again. I could use this in conjunction with schools when scheduling visits. Or I could use this with the Ready to Read tactical plan where we have ambassadores and regularly have to communicate and share documents with action for children.

This was interesting but I could not add my two favorites or link my blog because I needed added by the system administrator. It seems like it will be easy to do once I get assess.

Library uses for wikis

libraries can use a a wiki foranything but the short list below is some uses from the wilis I looked at:
-reference/resource page
-Informational (what's going on at the library)
-Best practices (Internal)
-Readers advisory

I think it is interesting that libraries can use a wiki for practly any thing they need.

I thinks Youth services librarians could use a wiki to post and share program ideas.

Library 2.0

What library 2.0 means to me:

Learn & Play says it all. It is where the organization and staff make strong efforts to learn what technology their customers need and want. Its about recognizing the many different resources on the web and identifying what you can use to improve your service to your customers (internal and external).

Delicious is a neat tool. I like how HFAR has set up a down and dirty readers advisory tool. I am not crazy about having to set up another account with another password. This would definately be a good tool for a possible research tool.

Twitter!!!

It's easy but I don't know if it is as fun as everyone has told me it was. Some people use it to tell what they are doing every few minutes to every couple of hours. Mostly I found conversations between friends. I don't know if my peasonality is outgoing enought to twit on a regular basis. I think libraries could use twitter as a free form of communication.

RSS search tools

I found Technorati the easiest RSS search tool to use. Syndic8.com was very confusing and the most difficult for me to use. It took me a while to figure it out. I was not interested in the topix site. it had too much information (too busy).

RSS Feeds

Using RSS Feeds is a great way to bring everything your interested in together at one place. I especially like the "sub with Bloglines" I added to my favorites. It makes so easy to add a site or blog to my bloglines.

Twitter

I think the concept of twitter is interesting but it it kind of scary to have people know where you are at all times.

7 1/2 habits of lifelong learners

The easiest of the 7 1/2 lifelong learning habits for me to follow is to accept responsibility for my personal learning. I became a Librarian because I believe everyone should be life long learners and it' is the easiest job to learn new things as you work.

The hardest of the 7 1/2 habits is the concept of Play. I have never felt that playing at work is acceptable, in fact it is unprofessional. However, I do believe if you're not having fun at what you do, you're in the wrong job. So, I can compramise with this because I am having fun but still getting my job done.
